Abstract

The findings of the study show that leadership style influenced students’ academic performance negatively in library school in Bayero University Kano. This is to say that leadership style contributes significantly to academic outcomes. Also, the teaching-learning environment of the school influences students’ academic performance positively because the school building is well structured, there are enough chairs and tables, the lecturers in the school are qualified enough in taking the respective courses given to them, and the lecturers make teaching and learning convenient for them. The teaching methods used in the library school also influence students’ academic performance positively because all the teaching methods used in library school, which include lecture method, discussion method, role-play method, and assignment method, are all suitable for the students. The funding is also judiciously utilized by the school management towards the provision of facilities and resources in the library school like healthcare facilities, tables, chairs, fans, etc., but the misappropriation of funds by the management contributes to poor school facilities in the library school. The results of the findings also showed that the problems associated with school variables include: poor infrastructural facilities and maintenance problems, power failure, inadequate funding, lack of adequate staff development programmes and training, and staff incompetence in service delivery. Measures such as improved infrastructural facilities and maintenance department, steady power supply for effective service delivery, adequate financial support for the library school to enable it meet global standards, frequent staff development and training programmes, and competence/professionalism on the part of workers in order to meet global standards are the main strategies for addressing the problems associated with school variables and students’ academic performance in library school.
