ASSESSMENT OF THE WASTE MANAGEMENT PRACTICE IN UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL PLATEAU STATE
Abstract
This study assesses the waste management practices in University Teaching Hospital, Plateau State (JUTH). Effective healthcare waste management is essential for preventing environmental pollution, reducing occupational hazards, and controlling the spread of infectious diseases. However, in many developing countries, including Nigeria, improper handling of hospital waste remains a major public health challenge due to inadequate infrastructure, insufficient training, and weak enforcement of regulations.
The main objectives of the study are to identify the types of waste generated in the hospital, examine the methods of waste segregation, collection, treatment, and disposal, assess staff compliance with waste management guidelines, identify challenges affecting waste management, and suggest possible solutions for improvement.
A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. Data were collected from 120 respondents comprising doctors, nurses, laboratory staff, cleaners, and waste handlers using structured questionnaires. The data collected were analyzed using simple percentage and frequency tables.
