Abstract

This study examines the role of development communication as a vital tool for achieving rural development in Osun State, Nigeria. Development communication is widely recognized as a strategic instrument for promoting awareness, participation, and behavioral change necessary for sustainable development. The study adopted a survey research design, using questionnaires to collect data from respondents across selected areas in Osun State. The findings reveal that development communication significantly contributes to rural development by enhancing awareness of government policies, encouraging community participation, and facilitating the dissemination of vital information. However, challenges such as illiteracy, inadequate infrastructure, poor information dissemination, and corruption hinder its effectiveness. The study concludes that development communication remains indispensable for national and rural development, particularly when effectively utilized by government and media institutions. It recommends that communication strategies should be more participatory, localized, and inclusive to ensure that rural dwellers are actively involved in development processes.
