Abstract

This study assessed the impact of Government expenditure on economic growth in Nigeria. The study was motivated by the increased contention among development economists and policy makers as to the relationship between Government expenditure and economic growth in Nigeria. It therefore examined the impact of Government recurrent expenditure (GRE) and Government capital expenditure (GCE) on Nigeria's economic growth proxied by GDP. Secondary data was used for the research with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) statistical bulletin being the major source of the data used for the analysis. The ordinary least square (OLS) method was used to analyze the data presented in multiple regression. Based on the findings, we recommend that there is need for government to target spending on productive sectors of the economy which will bring about sustainable economic growth.
