SECURITY CHALLENGES OF INFORMATION RESOURCES IN UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES FOR EFFECTIVE SERVICE DELIVERY (A CASE STUDY OF KHALIFA RABIU ISYAKU UNIVERSITY, (KHAIRUN)
Abstract
Abstract
This study examines the security challenges affecting information resources in university libraries and their implications for effective service delivery, with a focus on Khalifa Rabiu Isyaku University (KHAIRUN). University libraries play a vital role in supporting teaching, learning, and research through the provision of both print and electronic information resources. However, these resources are increasingly threatened by various security challenges such as theft, mutilation, unauthorized access, vandalism, cyber-attacks, and inadequate surveillance systems.
The study adopts a descriptive survey research design, targeting library staff and users of KHAIRUN. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Findings reveal that major security challenges include insufficient security infrastructure, lack of user awareness on proper resource handling, weak access control systems, and limited funding for modern security technologies. These challenges significantly hinder effective service delivery, resulting in reduced availability of materials, compromised information integrity, and decreased user satisfaction.
The study concludes that addressing these security challenges is essential for improving library performance and ensuring sustainable access to information resources. It recommends the adoption of advanced security technologies such as CCTV surveillance and electronic access control systems, regular user education programs, proper staff training, and increased funding for library security. Implementing these measures will enhance the protection of information resources and promote efficient and effective service delivery in university libraries.
