THE EFFECT OF INTERNAL CONTROL SYSTEM ON THE OPERATIONS OF DEPOSIT MONEY BANKS (DMBS) IN NIGERIA “CASE STUDY OF FIRST BANK NIGERIA PLC
Abstract
ABSTRACT-
This research work investigates the effect of internal control systems on the operations of Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) in Nigeria, with particular reference to First Bank of Nigeria PLC, Marina Branch, Lagos State. Recognizing the critical role that internal controls play in achieving financial integrity, fraud prevention, and operational efficiency, this study adopted a quantitative approach to examine how internal control systems influence the operational structure and outcomes of Nigerian banks.
The study utilized structured questionnaires distributed to a sample of ninety-three (93) employees at the head office of First Bank. The responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and chi-square tests. Four core hypotheses were tested, focusing on internal controls' relationship with operational efficiency, fraud prevention, implementation challenges, and strategies for control enhancement. Findings revealed a strong positive correlation between internal controls and operational efficiency, as well as a significant, though moderately strong, association with fraud prevention. Moreover, thestudy found that First Bank experienced minimal challenges in implementing internal control measures and had well-established strategies for enhancing their control frameworks.
These results validate several theoretical frameworks such as the Agency Theory, Stewardship Theory, and Fraud Triangle Theory, which propose that control mechanisms align managerial and organizational goals while reducing risks and enhancing performance. The findings further underscore the strategic role of internal controls beyond regulatory compliance, framing them as tools for operational and financial advancement.
The study concludes that robust internal control systems are essential to the sustainable operations and risk mitigation of Nigerian Deposit Money Banks. Recommendations include
investing in modern fraud detection technology, strengthening training programs, and leveraging advanced dataanalytics for control monitoring. Sector-wide, regulatory bodies are advised to update and enforce internal control standards while encouraging banks to foster a culture that prioritizes control effectiveness and transparency.
This research contributes to both academic discourse and practical policy-making by offering empirical evidence on how internal control mechanisms drive performance and resilience in the Nigerian banking sector.
