Abstract

Dyes are widely used in industries and have been of great concern due to their persistence as well as toxicological effects on human health and the environment. The efficiency of orange peel as an adsorbent for removing hazardous Congo red (CR) and alizarin red (AR) dyes from simulated wastewater was investigated. The prepared adsorbent was characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy (cary 630; Agilent Technologies). Batch adsorption studies were conducted by varying experimental parameters such as contact time, adsorbent dosage, concentration. Results revealed that contact time of 120min, adsorbent dose of0.6g and initial concentration of 2mg/L resulted in maximum removal of both CR and AR Isotherm study revealed that adsorption of CR and AR could be best represented by Pseudo-order isotherm. Kinetic study shows that the adsorption process follows pseudo-second-order-kinetics. Therefore, it is concluded that orange peel can be used as efficient bio-sorbent for removal of CR and AR from wastewater.
