INFLUENCE OF BROKEN HOME ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT OF ADOLESCENT IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL OF KATSINA STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
This research work investigated the influence of broken homes on academic performance and personality development of adolescents in senior secondary schools of Katsina State, Nigeria. The study employed a descriptive survey research design. A total of 200 senior secondary school students from broken homes took part in the study: eighty-six (86) students whose parents are deceased, thirty-nine (39) students from separated parents, and seventy-five (75) students from divorced parents. A questionnaire was used for data collection. Two research questions were answered using simple percentages. Results of the analysis indicated that parental death had a significant influence on adolescents from senior secondary schools in the study area. Results also showed that parental separation and divorce had a significant influence on adolescents in the study area. Based on these findings, it was recommended that spouses should lower their expectations towards their marriage partners. Women should also have good knowledge of housekeeping, whether educated or not, in order to minimize broken homes. The government should introduce programmes that will foster harmony in matrimonial homes and in society. It was also recommended that parents should endeavor to develop good relationships with their children even after separation.
