Abstract

The increasing resistance of microorganisms to antibiotics has necessitated the search for alternative antimicrobial agents. This study investigated the antibacterial effects of Baobab (Adansonia digitata) leaves extract on selected pathogenic bacteria, with the aim of identifying potential new antimicrobial agents. The results of the phytochemical screening revealed the presence of flavonoids, proteins, alkaloids, saponins, and cardiac glycosides in the Baobab leaves extract. The antimicrobial activity of the extract was evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, two common pathogens responsible for a range of infections. The results showed that the extract exhibited significant antimicrobial activity against both bacteria, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 6.25% for both bacteria. The study concludes that Baobab leaves extract has potential antimicrobial properties that can be exploited in the development of new antimicrobial agents. The findings of this study support the traditional use of Baobab leaves in the treatment of various infections and highlight the need for further research into the antimicrobial properties of this plant. Overall, this study contributes to the growing body of evidence on the potential of plants as sources of new antimicrobial agents.
