AWARENESS AND USE OF CLOUD COMPUTING FOR INFORMATION RETRIEVAL IN SELECTED ACADEMIC LIBRARIES IN KWARA STATE.
Abstract
This study examines the awareness and use of cloud computing for information retrieval in selected
academic libraries in Kwara State, Nigeria. Cloud computing has revolutionized access to
information by providing scalable, remote, and collaborative platforms that enhance library
service delivery. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design, targeting library
personnel in selected academic libraries within the state. Data were collected through a structured
questionnaire designed to capture respondents’ level of awareness of cloud computing tools, the
extent of their use for information retrieval, and associated challenges. Descriptive statistics such
as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations were used to analyze the data.
Findings revealed a high level of awareness of cloud-based applications such as Google Drive,
institutional repositories, and online databases, with moderate to high usage for retrieving
academic and research information. However, barriers such as poor internet connectivity,
inadequate technical skills, and limited institutional support were identified as hindrances to
optimal utilization. The study concludes that while awareness of cloud computing is substantial
among library staff, consistent use for information retrieval requires improved infrastructure and
training. It recommends regular professional development programmes, investment in reliable
internet facilities, and formulation of institutional policies to promote the adoption of cloud
technologies in academic libraries.
