Abstract

ABSTRACT The enteric diseases are caused by the members of family Enterobacteriaceae and Vibrionaceae. These pathogens are named enteric pathogens which belong to the genera that initiate infection by invading the intestinal epithelium. The aim of this study was to isolate, characterize, identify and to check the susceptibility pattern of enteric organisms from farm animals. Approximately 300g of fresh chicken feces was collected under the cages across the entire length of each row, mixed, and stored in a sterile bottle. The samples were transported to Kebbi State University of Science and Technology Aleiro Microbiology Laboratory for analysis. Antibiotic susceptibility test was performed using the Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method, the turbidity of colonies growing in a nutrient broth was adjusted using the 0.5 MacFarland standard and was spread on the surface of the previously prepared Mueller Hinton agar plates using sterile glass rod. The results shows that most of the samples collected from the farm are contaminated with Enterobacteriaceae pathogens. This group of bacteria can be transmits to human through faeco-oral route and through the ingestion of animal meat as source of food. The high prevalence of Klebsiella wasconducted research work on antibiotic resistance of enterobacterioceae isolated from the faecal flora of fattening pigs, he reported that Klebsiella and E.coli are the most prevalence bacteria in fattening pig with 31% and 30% prevalence respectively while other members of Enterobacteriaceae occur in a lesser percentage. In conclusion, The result of this study indicated that chicken faeces were contaminated with enteric bacteria resulting from cross contamination from the poultry faeces or from the housing environment.
