Abstract

This study investigated the toxicological effects of the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana on Wistar rats. The fungus was isolated from diseased Zonocerus grasshopper. Standard microbiological techniques were used for isolation, purification, and preservation, while identification was based on macroscopic and microscopic characteristics. A spore suspension of B. bassiana was prepared in sterile water containing Tween-80 and administered to Wistar rats via intraperitoneal injection. The animals were divided into control and treatment groups, and observations were made for mortality, behavioral changes, histological. The results showed no mortality in the treated rats, indicating low acute toxicity. However. Histological examination revealed no severe tissue damage. Histopathological examination of wister rats show no sign of Beauveria bassiana infection in major organs, including the liver, heart, kidney and intestines, supporting its safety and specificity as an entomopathogenic fungus. These findings are consistent with earlier reports that B. bassiana is generally safe for mammals but may trigger transient systemic responses when administered at higher doses.
