EVALUATION OF ANTIOXIDANT AND ANTIDIABETIC ACTIVITIES OF ETHYL ACETATE LEAF AND SEED EXTRACTS OF MEGAPHRYNIUM MACROSTACHYUM IN COMPARISON WITH ETHYL ACETATE LEAF EXTRACT OF THAUMATOCOCCUS DANIELLII
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The traditional and Ayurvedic medicinal practises have used ethnomedicinal plants such as Megaphrynium macrostachyum and Thaumatococcus daniellii. The current study compared and contrasted the antioxidant and antidiabetic effect of the ethyl acetate extract of leaves and seeds of M. macrostachyum and ethyl acetate leaf extract of T. daniellii. The samples of the leaves were collected in the botanical garden of Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State, Nigeria, dried in air and analysed using ethyl acetate. The DPPH scavenging assay, hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) scavenging assay, nitric oxide scavenging assay, and hydroxyl radical (OH) scavenging assay were used to determine the antioxidant activity. The antidiabetic capability was evaluated using 0.2-amylase and 0.2-glucosidase inhibition analysis. The phytochemical profiling identified the presence of saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, glycosides as well as steroids in the extracts. Findings showed that butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) had a better scavenging activity (H₂O 2, 94.43 0.24 0.37, n,nt ), than the plant extracts (H₂O 2, 92.43 0.31 0.21, n,nt )ZA . The antioxidant and inhibitory activity of the leaf extract of T. daniellii was greater compared with the extracts of M. macrostachyum. The ethyl acetate extracts of both species, therefore, have a potential to be effective antioxidant and antidiabetic compound due to the number of bioactive compounds that they possess.
