Abstract

Although Nwaniba beach is devoid of oil exploration activities, it may be susceptible to fertilizer runoffs from fertilizers applied to soil as well as waste discharge. This can upset the good water quality as well as nutritive standard of fish in the water system. Application of digestion process for evaluation of absorption rate of certain elements from water to gills of Oreochromis niloticus revealed that all the element in water analyzed were higher than those of the gills. N, Fe and Cu were high in both sample and absorption rates of each element (Zn: 0.6, Pb: nil, Fe: 0.8, Cd: 0.03 and Cu:0.8) had value below one, depicting safety. Absence of Pb was opined to be as a result of absence of Pb generating factor around the river system. Oreochromis niloticus from Nwaniba beach is safe for human consumption.
