PROJECT ON PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS AND ANTI MICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF VERNONIA AMYGDALINA, ZIZIZPHUS ABYSINNICA AND FICUS THONINGII USED IN ETHNOBOTANICAL MEDICINE IN NORTHERN NIGERIA.
Abstract
Abstract:
This study investigates the phytochemical composition and antimicrobial activity of three
medicinal plants: Vernonia amygdalina, Ziziphus abyssinica, and Ficus thoningii against
clinical isolates. Phytochemical screening was conducted to identify the presence of
bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and steroids The
antimicrobial potential of the plant extracts was evaluated using standard methods,
including the agar well diffusion assay, against various clinical pathogens, including
bacteria and fungi. The results indicated that all three plant species exhibited varying
degrees of antimicrobial activity, with ziziphus abysinnica showing the most potent inhibition
against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Phytochemical analysis revealed
the presence of several bioactive compounds, which are likely responsible for the observed
antimicrobial effects. The findings support the potential use of these plants as alternative
sources for developing antimicrobial agents, contributing to the search for new therapeutic
strategies against resistant pathogens. Further studies are recommended to isolate and
characterize the active compounds responsible for these biological activities.
