Abstract

World Health Organization (WHO) estimates 1.17m deaths and over 50 million injures per annum worldwide, due to traffic accidents and management, a breakdown shows that about 70% of deaths occur in developing countries like Nigeria, the increased rate of fatal accidents has been attributed to increased motorization, attitudinal factors etc., i.e. driver’s error, over speeding, inexperience and so on. 350,961 people were killed on Nigerian roads from 1960-2016 while 1,208,890 were injured within the same period. The challenges militating against road traffic safety in Nigeria varies from political to legislative differences as well as human and cultural acceptability. Every road became a potential death trap until government’s response and intervention. Achieving Road Traffic Safety in Nigeria requires a well-focused government intervention which has been manifested in a number of ways over the years. Owing to the fact that accidents (caused through Motorists negative attitude, mechanical malfunctions, or environmental defects) are inevitable, therefore, there is need for its management. Currently the concept and adoption of road safety management strategies is one commonly adopted worldwide in recent time; this paper therefore examines the application of concepts in accident rate reduction in Nigeria while furthering the investigation that high level of motorization is a causal of accident. From 1970 till date, government has been relentless in efforts at making Road Safety better in the country (S. O. Oyesile, 2020).
