Abstract

This project presents the design and installation of a 7.5kVA solar power system to provide reliable, sustainable, and cost-effective electrical power supply to the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department building. This primarily is to reduce dependency on the conventional grid supply, mitigate power interruptions, and promote the use of renewable energy technologies within the academic environment. The system comprises photovoltaic (PV) solar panels, a solar charge controller, a 7.5kVA inverter, deep-cycle batteries for energy storage, and protection components such as surge protector, circuit breaker and distribution components. A detailed energy audit was conducted to assess the total load requirements, which guided the sizing of the solar components. The design was based on optimal solar irradiance values for the location, battery autonomy requirements, and inverter capacity to handle peak loads efficiently. Key considerations included load balancing, safety, scalability, and compliance with relevant electrical standards.
