PREPARATION OF RAW CHARCOAL SUPPORTED SILVER PHOSPHATE COMPOSITE FOR THE REDUCTION OF TOXIC CR (VI) IN WATER
Abstract
We report here the preparation of silver phosphate (AgP) and raw charcoal
composited to silver phosphate (C/AgP), and their remarkable photocatalytic
decontamination of toxic hexavalent chromium in simulated wastewater. Both pure
silver phosphate and charcoal-supported silver phosphate (AgP) were characterized
and their morphologies and compositions were confirmed with techniques such as
FTIR,SEM,TEM and DLS. The prepared samples were employed as visible-light
driven catalytic materials for the reduction of hexavalent chromium to trivalent
chromium in the presence and absence of oxalic acid as hole scavenger. The
photoreduction of Cr(VI) in the absence of oxalic acid was inhibited due to the
presence of photo-induced holes. However, when oxalic acid was added to the
chromium solution as the hole scavenger, a rapid photocatalytic reduction of
Cr(VI)to Cr(III) was observed, owing to the consumption of hole and the acceleration
of the oxidation reaction. Photocatalytic reduction of charcoal-supported AgP was
enhanced compared to bare AgP. Enhanced C/AgP compared to bare AgP is
attributed to the doping effect of carbon in the raw charcoal. This work opens up
the importance of using raw charcoal as solid support for photocatalytic
decontamination of inorganic pollutants.
