Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the security challenges facing university libraries and the coping strategies employed to ensure effective service delivery, using Bayero University Library as a case study. The study aims to identify the types of security apparatus used by the library, explore the physical security challenges experienced within the library service delivery, and examine the key security issues affecting the environment. A quantitative research approach was adopted, with data collected through the administration of structured questionnaires to library staff and users. The findings reveal that Bayero University Kano Library utilizes various security tools including Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) systems and security personnel to support service delivery. Key security measures implemented include ID verification at the entrance and surveillance monitoring, which help to control unauthorized access and maintain order within the facility. However, the library still contends with significant challenges such as book theft, vandalism, unauthorized access, and overcrowding. These security issues hinder the smooth delivery of library services and affect the accessibility and protection of information resources. The study concludes that while efforts have been made to secure the library environment, there is a need for continuous improvement in both physical and technological security measures. It recommends the integration of advanced security systems, regular maintenance of facilities, and the training of staff to enhance awareness and response to security threats. Strengthening these areas is essential for ensuring a secure, efficient, and conducive academic environment within university libraries.
