INFLUENCE OF TEACHER’ S QUALIFICATIONS ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SS2 STUDENTS IN PHYSICS IN SECONDARY SCHOOL IN GAYA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA
Abstract
This study examined the influence of teachers’ qualifications on the academic performance of Senior Secondary School Two (SS2) students in Physics in secondary schools in Gaya Local Government Area. The study was motivated by the persistent poor performance of students in Physics and the need to identify factors responsible for this trend, particularly the role of teachers’ professional qualifications.
A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population comprised all Physics teachers and SS2 students in selected secondary schools within the study area. A sample was drawn using a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire designed by the researcher, focusing on teachers’ academic qualifications, teaching experience, and professional competence, as well as students’ academic performance.
The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, and mean scores. The findings revealed that teachers’ qualifications significantly influence students’ academic performance in Physics. It was also discovered that teachers with higher academic and professional qualifications, as well as adequate teaching experience, tend to enhance students’ understanding and performance in the subject.
Based on the findings, it was recommended that only qualified and professionally trained teachers should be employed to teach Physics in secondary schools. Additionally, continuous professional development and training programs should be organized to improve teachers’ instructional skills and effectiveness.
In conclusion, the study established that teachers’ qualifications play a crucial role in improving students’ academic performance in Physics, thereby emphasizing the need for quality teacher education and training in the educational system.
