Abstract

This study analyzed flood risk mitigation measures adopted by rice farmers in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area (LGA) of Kano State, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to describe the socio-economic characteristics of the farmers, identify the mitigation strategies they use explore factors influencing adoption, and highlight the constraints they face. Primary data were collected from 110 rice farmers through a structured questionnaire using a two-stage sampling procedure. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages were used for analysis. The results showed that most farmers are male, operates on small-scale farms, and depend on personal savings or bank loans. Heavy rainfall and poor drainage were the main causes of flooding. Common mitigation strategies included drainage improvement, early planting, and early-maturing rice varieties, while adoption of flood-tolerant varieties was low. Constraints included limited finance, poor infrastructure, inadequate government support, and restricted access to weather information. The study recommends improving financial support, weather information access, extension services, and promoting climate-resilient farming practices to enhance flood resilience in the area.
