Abstract

ABSTRACT Diospyros mespiliformis, is a large dioecious evergreen tree found in the savannahs of Africa, characterized by a dense foliage with leathery dark green leaves. The project was carried out to determine the proximate composition of Diospyros mespiliformis seeds using standard procedures. The results obtained from the proximate analysis were: moisture content (9.47 ± 0.29), ash content (4.65 ± 0.24), crude fat (3.58 ± 0.21), and crude Fiber (2.41 ± 0.14), crude protein (6.56 ± 0.28), and carbohydrate (73.43 ± 0.33). The results from this study showed that the seeds of Diospyros mespiliformis has nutritional value comparable to other conventional food crops, and can be used to replace calories and nutrients that could otherwise be derived from them during scarcity. However, further processing may be required when used as animal feed.
