Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the influence of the television programme “The Johnsons” in shaping youth worldviews and social norms in Nigeria. The objectives of the study include exploring the show's portrayal of family dynamics, its impact on cultural values and societal norms, and its role in influencing ethical decision-making, gender roles, and modern social behaviors among youth. Using a survey research method, data were collected from 364 respondents, 338 of whom were regular viewers of the show. The findings reveal that “The Johnsons” has a significant impact on youth, particularly in fostering positive perceptions of family relationships, cultural traditions, and ethical behaviors. Approximately 83% of respondents agreed that the show positively influenced their understanding of family dynamics, while 71% affirmed its influence on societal issues such as honesty, respect, and responsibility. The show also challenges traditional gender roles and socio-economic expectations, while promoting diversity, responsibility, and modern social values. This study concludes that “The Johnsons” serves as a critical medium for shaping the worldview of Nigerian youth by promoting positive attitudes, cultural pride, and ethical behaviors. It recommends that the producers emphasize themes addressing emerging societal challenges, such as gender equality and mental health, to further enhance its social impact. The research underscores the importance of television programmes as tools for cultural transmission and societal development.
