Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Alchornea Cordifolia is a common plant, which has featured greatly in traditional medicinal practice. It’s a plant widely used in Africa to solve many health issues. Phytochemical and proximate composition of Alchornea Cordifolia (Christmas bush) leaves obtained from the campus of Abia state university was investigated in order to evaluate the nutritional value in human. Objective: This study evaluated the phytochemical and proximate composition of Alchornea cordifolia. Method: The evaluation of Phytochemical and Proximate composition of Alchornea cordifolia. Were performed using standard method. Result: The results of the phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of tannins, Flavonoids, saponins and Cyanogenic glycoside while alkaloids was absent in the sample. The result of proximate composition showed that the leave contained moisture (5.00%), ash (3.65%), crude protein (5.05%), crude fat (9.50%), crude fibre (13.50%), and carbohydrate (63.29%). The quantitative analysis of the detected phytochemicals in the leaves was saponins, Flavono
