GOVERNMENT AND PUBLIC SCHOOLS MANAGEMENT IN DUTSINMA TOWN OF KATSINA STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Education is widely acknowledged as a cornerstone for national development, playing a critical
role in shaping the socio-economic progress of nations, including Nigeria. Despite its
importance, the management of public schools in Nigeria remains fraught with systemic
challenges such as inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, weak administrative capacity, and
inconsistent policy implementation. Although the responsibility for education is
constitutionally shared among federal, state, and local governments, bureaucratic inefficiencies
and lack of accountability often hinder the achievement of educational objectives. Government
initiatives like the Universal Basic Education (UBE) program and the State Universal Basic
Education Boards (SUBEBs) were established to address these issues, yet many public
schools—especially in rural areas like Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area of Katsina State—
continue to struggle with educational service delivery. This study explores the dynamics of
public school management in Nigeria, with particular focus on government involvement, policy
frameworks, and the persistent challenges affecting quality education in underserved
communities
