ANALYSIS OF WATER AND SEDIMENT FROM KOGIN MAI KILAGO AND JAN RUWA IN PANSHEKARA AREA
Abstract
Water and sediment quality have a significant influence on public health, aquatic ecosystems, and local economies, particularly in areas where water resources are directly utilized for domestic and agricultural purposes. This study investigates the quality of water and sediment from two rivers, Kogin Mai Kilago and Jan Ruwa, located in Panshekara, Kano State, Nigeria. The research focuses on evaluating physicochemical properties, microbial contaminants, and heavy metal concentrations in these water bodies. Sampling was conducted over three months to capture seasonal variations, and analyses were performed using standard laboratory methods. Results revealed significant pollution in both rivers, primarily due to anthropogenic activities such as waste disposal, agricultural runoff, and industrial discharge. Findings indicate that some parameters exceeded World Health Organization (WHO) and Nigerian Standards for Drinking Water Quality (NSDWQ) limits, raising concerns about the safety of these water resources. Recommendations include pollution control measures, community engagement, and periodic monitoring to safeguard water quality in the region.
