DETERMINATION OF SOME PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PARAMETERS AND HEAVY METALS LEVEL IN BOREHOLE WATER FROM NASSARAWA LOCAL GOVERNMENT, KANO STATE
Abstract
The borehole water samples were collected from various locations in Nassarawa local government, Kano State, to represent the water quality in the area. The samples were analyzed for heavy metal (lead, cadmium, Chromium, and Cupper) using established method such as Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The results of the samples were found to be; sample A; Cd (0.019), Cu (1.507), Cr (0.067), Pb (0.017), sample B; Cd (0.017), Cu (0.108), Cr (0.001), Pb (0.010), sample C; Cd (0.010) Cu (0.064) Cr (0.207) Pb (ND) sample D; Cd (0.011), Cu (0.384) Cr (0.268), Pb (ND), sample E; Cd (0.011), Cu (0.175), Cr (0.278), Pb (ND). In addition to heavy metal analysis, the physicochemical parameters of the borehole water samples were assessed. The results of the physicochemical analysis were found to be; sample A; pH (6.5), DO (4.4), EC (0.55), TDS (397). Sample B; pH (6.6), DO (5.3), EC (0.76), TDS (545). Sample C; pH (7.1), DO (5.9), EC (0.09), TDS (65). Sample D; pH (6.6), DO (5.5), EC (0.74), TDS (526). Sample E; pH (6.9), DO (5.7), EC (0.53), TDS (253). The results of the heavy metal analysis and physicochemical analysis were compared with the WHO guidelines for drinking water quality (for heavy metals Cd (0.003), Cu (0.070), Cr (0.010), Pb (0.020) and for physicochemical parameters such as pH, DO, EC). Some exceeded the WHO standard while some are within the range, any values that exceeded the WHO limits were considered to indicate potential contamination and a risk to human health. Recommendations for treatment or remediation were provided based on the findings to ensure that the borehole water samples from different areas in Nassarawa Local Government, Kano State met the WHO standards for safe drinking.
