Abstract

This study titled “antifungal activity of dandelion (taraxacum officinale) extract on Candida albicans and some dematophytes” is aimed at determining the antifungal activity of dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) extract against Candida albicans and selected dermatophyte species. The objectives of the study include to; determine the in vitro antifungal activity of dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) extract against Candida albicans, determine the in vitro antifungal activity of dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) extract against Candida albicans, assess the efficacy of dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) extract against common dermatophyte species, determine the MIC and MBC. Chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methods were employed to analyze the extracts. The results showed that the aqueous extract of dandelion exhibited considerable antifungal activity, with the most significant inhibition observed against Candida albicans at 100% concentration, with a zone of inhibition measuring 23 mm. The ethanol extract demonstrated enhanced antifungal activity compared to the aqueous extract, achieving a maximum inhibition zone of 25 mm against Candida albicans at 100g concentration, indicating that ethanol is a more efficient solvent for extracting bioactive compounds. Furthermore, the n-hexane extract also showed moderate antifungal effects, with the highest inhibition again observed in Candida albicans (25 mm) at 100% concentration. In conclusion, the study demonstrated promising antifungal properties of dandelion extract, suggesting its potential as a natural alternative to conventional treatments, while also recommending further research to isolate bioactive compounds, develop topical formulations, investigate synergistic effects with existing antifungals, and conduct toxicity and safety studies for its medical and agricultural applications.
