INVESTIGATION INTO STUDENTS MATHEMATICAL AREAS OF DIFFICULTY IN LEARNING OF CHEMISTRY AT SECONDARY SCHOOL IN KATSINA METROPOLIS
Abstract
Mathematical ability is a major contributory factor to the success of a student in any science course. This study aims to determine the source of difficulty that students often find when performing calculations in chemistry. A structured questionnaire was used to obtain data from 150 students by simple random sampling technique. Interviews and focus group discussion were carried out to seek clarifications on some responses to the questionnaire questions and to elicit detailed explanations of the causes of the perceived difficulties. Frequencies and percentage were used to answer the research questions. The findings indicate that the causes of difficulty could be summarize into i.e: poor background in mathematics and cognitive complexity from students, teaching process, access to the language of instruction. The implications and recommendation of the study were made. One of which is that Teachers should be enlightened on the use of teaching methods as this will aid teaching and learning and stimulate students interest in schools.
