Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examined the impact of agricultural cooperatives on farmers’ access to credit and market information in Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The research was motivated by persistent barriers that smallholder farmers face in accessing formal credit and reliable market information, as well as the institutional inefficiencies that limit the performance of cooperative societies. A total of 80 cooperative members were purposively selected for the study. Primary data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, multiple linear regression, and Likert-scale ranking techniques. The results showed that membership in agricultural cooperatives significantly improved farmers’ access to credit by reducing collateral constraints and facilitating collective loan guarantees. Cooperatives also enhanced farmers’ access to market information, particularly in relation to commodity prices, demand patterns, and buyer linkages. However, the study found that the performance of cooperatives was hindered by weak governance structures, inadequate government support, limited access to training, and delays in policy implementation. Institutional and policy challenges were identified as critical barriers to maximizing cooperative efficiency and sustainability. The findings underscore the vital role that cooperatives play in promoting rural development, poverty reduction, and agricultural productivity when adequately supported. The study concludes that improving institutional frameworks, strengthening cooperative management, and enhancing government support mechanisms are essential for optimizing the role of cooperatives in rural finance and market systems. It recommends targeted capacity-building programs for cooperative leaders, improved access to digital market information systems, and consistent policy interventions aimed at fostering transparency, accountability, and long-term sustainability in the cooperative movement."
