THE ROLE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM IN PROMOTING CULTURAL VALUE AMONG THE YOUTH IN THE SOCIETY
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examines the role of documentary film in promoting cultural values among youth, with a specific focus on Osogbo, Osun State, Nigeria. Documentary films, as non-fictional media forms, serve as powerful tools for education, information dissemination, and social orientation. Despite their historical significance in shaping societal narratives and preserving cultural heritage, their potential in influencing youth cultural awareness and values remains underexplored. This research therefore investigates how documentary films contribute to cultural value promotion, the extent of their influence, and the level of acceptance among young people.
The study adopts a descriptive survey research design, utilizing structured questionnaires to collect data from a sample of 399 respondents selected through random sampling. Data were analyzed using simple percentages and presented in tabular form. The findings reveal that a significant proportion of youths are aware of documentary films and frequently engage with them. The results further indicate that the majority of respondents believe documentary films play a vital role in promoting cultural values, enhancing cultural awareness, and shaping societal perceptions. However, the study also finds varying degrees of exposure and differing perceptions regarding the extent of influence of documentary content.
The study concludes that documentary films are effective instruments for cultural education and value transmission among youths. It recommends increased production and dissemination of culturally relevant documentaries, as well as greater involvement of media institutions and policymakers in leveraging documentary films as tools for cultural preservation and youth development.
