Abstract

This study examines the influence of digital storytelling and traditional teaching methods on spelling proficiency among lower basic pupils in Ungogo Local Government, Kano State, Nigeria. Adopting a quasi-experimental design, the research assessed the comparative effectiveness of the approaches in enhancing spelling skills. Four specific objectives guided the study, corresponding to four research questions that were systematically addressed. The study population consisted of eighty-seven (87) pupils, from which a sample size of forty (40) was selected for analysis. Data collection was carried out through interviews, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of pupils’ experiences and spelling proficiency outcomes. Findings from this investigation provide valuable insights into the role of digital storytelling and traditional instructional methods in language acquisition at the lower basic level. After the interview and research footage was validated by the supervisor, the findings revealed that the sstudy explored the effectiveness of digital storytelling compared to traditional methods in improving spelling proficiency among pupils. Findings had revealed that students who used digital storytelling had recalled words faster and had made fewer errors, with private school pupils having outperformed those in public schools. The results had suggested that access to technology had enhanced learning efficiency. Statistical analysis had confirmed that digital storytelling had significantly boosted spelling accuracy, speed, and retention, supporting the study's objectives. The study concluded that digital storytelling had significantly enhanced spelling proficiency compared to traditional teaching methods. Pupils who used digital storytelling had recalled words faster, made fewer errors, and demonstrated greater learning efficiency, with private school students having performed better due to improved access to technology. While traditional methods had remained effective, they had been less efficient in terms of spelling speed and accuracy. Statistical analysis had confirmed that digital storytelling had strengthened spelling retention, speed, and precision, highlighting its value in modern education.
