ECOLOGICAL SURVEY ON THE POPULATION, DIVERSITY AND DENSITY OF THE VERTEBRATES IN BAYERO UNIVERSITY OLD CAMPUS KANO
Abstract
The purpose of this research is to determine an ecological survey of the population, diversity and density of the vertebrates in Bayero University Old Campus Kano. In line on the objectives of this study ecological survey on the population, diversity and density of the vertebrates. This survey was carried out in different location in Bayero University Old Campus Kano such as: girl’s hostel, staff quarters, sport complex and love garden. I visited the study site once in a day for good one week around 6:30pm to observe the departure of the vertebrates in the study area. To my observation the study area has abundance of species of vertebrate. I observe population density estimates terrestrial vertebrates by physical observation method using my phone camera to snap pictures and record a short video clip which help me to count the vertebrates species from the different sites, the sites include; Site A girls hostel, site B staff quarters, site C love-garden and site D sport complex. The highest vertebrate abundance recorded was birds 125 (42.5%) while the least recorded vertebrate was Rat 26 (8.8%). The Shannon diversity index wax 1.41, Simpson’s index 0.27, the community dominance index wax 125.25, evenness was 0.81. The differences in the mean values among the treatment groups are not great enough to exclude the possibility that the difference is due to random sampling variability; there is not a statistically significant difference (P = 0.141) because the p-value is greater than 0.05. Based on the results obtained, the following recommendations are made: Further studies should be conducted using other sampling techniques and by also expanding the geographical scope of the study, there is need to also expand the duration of the study as seasonal variations affect population dynamics of vertebrates and routine vertebrate abundance and diversity monitoring should be encouraged.
