DETERMINATION OF RF VALUE OF BIOACTIVE COMPOUNDS IN MORINDA CITRIFOLIA (NONI) LEAVES USING THIN LAYER CHROMATOGRAPHY (TLC)
Abstract
The analysis of Morinda citrifolia leaves has been found to possess medicinal uses which include antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities. Various ethanolic extracts of the plant obtained and analyzed using TLC gave various results. The study was aimed at determining the Rf values of bioactive compounds present in Morinda citrifolia by thin layer chromatography. TLC showed various spots and Rf values range from 0.40 to 0.64 with 4 spots in P1 TLC plate, 0.32 to 0.84 with 7 spots in P2 TLC plates and 0.27 to 0.71 with 7 spots in P3 TLC plate. The result of the study revealed the presence of phytochemical constituent such as alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics and anthraquinones in the leaves extract of this species. It could be concluded that Morinda citrifolia leaves contained rich variety of phytochemicals and antioxidant.
