Abstract

This study examines the aesthetic and narrative functions of costume in film production, using Lisabi by Lateef Adedimeji as a case study. The research demonstrates that costume in film serves purposes beyond adornment; it supports storytelling, expresses cultural identity, and shapes character interpretation. Through qualitative analysis, the study applies performance theory and the visual analysis framework to selected scenes where costume influences audience understanding and strengthens the film’s visual message. The cultural background of Yoruba history, including traditional fabrics, battle attire, royal clothing, and meaningful color patterns, provides a foundation for interpreting the cultural and historical accuracy of the costumes in Lisabi. In the film, costume plays a central role in presenting themes such as resistance, leadership, unity, morality, and the struggle between oppression and freedom. The findings show that costume is an essential element of visual storytelling. It defines social roles, reflects emotional states, and situates characters within cultural and symbolic contexts. The study also emphasizes the collaboration between the director, costume designer, and actors, highlighting how costume contributes to performance quality and narrative coherence. However, the study concludes that in Nollywood historical films, costume functions as both an aesthetic.
