CHARACTERISING GROWTH BEHAVIOUR OF YEAST STRAINS ISOLATED FROM SOME MANGO (MANGIFERA INDICA) FRUIT VARIETIES
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Yeasts are widely distributed on various plants and more localised especially on fruits. This research was carried out to characterize the growth behavior of yeast strains isolated from some mango fruits (Mangifera indica) varieties. Ten (10) samples of Fresh mango (Magnifera indica) were used for this study and a total number of 5 yeast isolates were isolated from the different mango fruit samples. The yeast were isolated using agar plate method and pure isolates were identified base on their microscopic and macroscopic examination of the morphological characteristics. The findings showed the characterization of Candida tropicalis, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Pichia anonala and Kluyveromyces Marxianus. The diversity of yeasts isolated from the five mango fruits samples employ a wide range of natural flora that could function under varied environmental conditions. Presence of some of these organisms can lead to spoilage hence causing major economic problem such as loss of fruit products. Care should be taken during handling of fruit and fruit products to enhance the keeping quality of Mango fruits.
