ASSESMENT OF SOME HAEMATOLOGICAL PARAMETERS ON THE EFFECT ON INHALATION OF SMOKE AMONG COW ROASTERS
Abstract
Smoke inhalation is an inhalation of large toxic fume or by-product of combusting substance through respiratory tract which results in serious injury or death. This study is aimed at determining some hematological parameters on the effect of inhalation of smoke on cow dealers/roasters in Aba, Abia State. This comparative study involved 50 cow meat roasters along Ahia Nkwo Market and Afule market who were male subjects and were between the ages of 20-50 years. Results showed that the exposed subjects had a mean age of 33.3 ±9.3, the mean levels of the hematological parameters are: Hb 15.2±1.1g/dL,PCV 0.45 ±±3.1L/L,RBC 5.4±0.5x10^12/MCV83.3 ±5.4fl, MCH 28.5±2.5pg, MCHC 34.3 ±1.4g/dL and PLT 298.±62.×10^9/.The test subjects also had a mean value of T.WBC 7.5±1.3x10^9/LLymphocytes38.0±5.1×10^9/and Neutrophils56.0±9.5×10^9/L.The control subjects had a mean age of 33.7± 8.3, there hematological mean values were as follows: Hb 15.0± 0.91g/dL,PCV 43.7L/L± 2.4,RBC 5.0±0.3x1012/L,MCV 82.8± 3.9fl, MCH 28.1± 1.9pg,MCHC 34.0± 1.3g/dL and PLT 277.2±41.2x10^9/.The control subjects also had a mean level of T.WBC 6.5±0.9 x10°/L Lymphocytes34.5±7.9X10^ /and Neutrophil51.9±5.1 x10°/L.The exposed subjects had an increased significant mean level of PCV(0.45±3.1)L/L,RBC(5.4±0.5)X10^12/Land Platelets(298.3±62.3)x10^9/Lwhen compared tothe controls(0.43±2.4L/L,5.0±0.3×10^12/Land277.2±41.2×10^9/LP>0.05..The exposed subjects also had an increased significant leucocyte count (7.5±1.3)X10^9/Land Neutrophil(56.0±9.5)×10^9/Lwhen compared to the controls (6.5±0.910^9/Land51.9±5.1×10^9/L)P>0.05,,there was also an increase in the mean level x of lymphocytes(38.0±5.1)x10^9/Lcompared to the control subjects (34.5±7.9)x10^9/LP>0.05.Exposure to charcoal smoke is associated with significant alterations in the hematological profile (Increased PCV, RBC,PLT,T.WBC,Neutrophil and decreased lymphocytes). This could lead to health problems and disease progression.
