Abstract

ABSTRACT The Crank and Connecting Rod Displacement Apparatus is a mechanical engineering project aimed at designing and analyzing a mechanism that converts reciprocating movement of the piston to rotary motion of crankshaft. This apparatus linkage is found in various engineering applications, including internal combustion engines, pumps, and compressors. The primary objective of this project is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the kinematic and dynamic behavior of the crank and connecting rod mechanism. The project involves the design and fabrication of a crank and connecting rod apparatus in order to add value to the existing one in the mechanics of machines laboratory and to demonstrates the displacement relationship between the crank rotation and the connecting rod movement. Through precise measurements and analysis, the apparatus will help in studying the displacement, velocity, and acceleration of the connecting rod as a function of the crank angle. Advanced tools such as CAD software for design and simulation, along with experimental setups for validation, will be utilized. Key deliverables include a detailed report on the design process, theoretical calculations, and experimental results. The outcome of this project will provide valuable understandings into the performance characteristics of the crank and connecting rod mechanism, which can be applied to improve the efficiency and functionality of mechanical systems in various mechanical. A 2mm sheet metal was cut to required dimensions and aluminum bar of 5mm thickness servers as linkages. Keywords: Kinematics, Crank, Displacement, CAD.
