Abstract

The study was designed to investigate Reading Habits As Correlate Of Students’ Achievement In English Language In Secondary Schools In Akoko South-West Local Government, Ondo State, The study employed descriptive research design. The population of the research consist of all Secondary school students, Five (5) of the senior secondary schools in Akoko South-West Local Government Area of Ondo State were randomly selected for the study. Thereafter, simple random techniques were used to select one hundred and fifty (150) students who finally served as sample for the study. It comprises of thirty (30) students each from the selected schools. Base on the findings it was revealed that many students in the area love to read adventure and motivational books. This shows that students are serious about personal growth and doing well in school, likely influenced by their parents, teachers, and society's strong focus on academic success. While some students said they have interesting books at home, many still believe that their home libraries don’t have enough books or the kind of stories they enjoy. On the part of the school libraries, students mostly agreed that their school libraries are helpful and contain books they like. However, the big issue is that the books are not regularly updated, which cause students to lose may interest in the long run, Lastly, the study also found that parents are trying their best to support reading by buying books, encouraging reading at home, and talking to their children about what they read. Based on the above finding, it was recommended that School authorities and parents should make deliberate efforts to provide more of these types of books in both school and home libraries. This will help sustain students’ interest in reading and also encourage better performance in English Language. Keywords: Reading Habits, Students’, Academics, Achievement, English Language
