Abstract

Abstract This study investigates the educational problems affecting the teaching and learning of agriculture in tertiary institutions in Kano State, Nigeria. Agriculture plays a vital role in national development, food security, and employment generation; however, its effective teaching and learning at the tertiary level face numerous challenges. The study examines key factors such as inadequate funding, lack of modern instructional facilities, insufficient practical exposure, poor curriculum implementation, and shortage of qualified personnel. It also assesses how these challenges impact students’ academic performance, skill acquisition, and overall interest in agricultural studies. A descriptive research design was adopted, and data were collected through questionnaires administered to students and lecturers across selected tertiary institutions in Kano State. The data were analyzed using appropriate statistical tools to identify patterns and relationships among the variables. The findings reveal that inadequate practical facilities, limited access to modern agricultural technologies, and ineffective teaching methods significantly hinder the quality of agricultural education. The study concludes that addressing these challenges requires a multi-dimensional approach, including increased funding, curriculum reform, provision of modern teaching aids, and capacity building for educators. It recommends stronger collaboration between government, educational institutions, and agricultural stakeholders to enhance the quality and relevance of agricultural education. Ultimately, improving the teaching and learning of agriculture will contribute to sustainable agricultural development and economic growth in Kano State and Nigeria at large.
