COMPARATIVE STUDIES ON QUALITY OF WATER FROM NWAOGBA SPRING AND ISUNABO BOREHOLE UTURU, ABIA STATE
Abstract
This study comparatively assessed the quality of water from Nwaogba Spring and Isunabo Borehole in Uturu, Abia State, Nigeria. Water samples were collected from both sources and analyzed for physicochemical and microbiological parameters using standard laboratory methods. Parameters examined included pH, temperature, turbidity, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids (TDS), hardness, chloride, nitrate, and microbial load. The results were compared with World Health Organization (WHO) and Nigerian Standard for Drinking Water Quality (NSDWQ) guidelines. Findings revealed variations between the two water sources, with the borehole water generally exhibiting more stable physicochemical properties, while the spring water showed higher susceptibility to contamination. Although most parameters were within permissible limits, traces of microbial presence and slight deviations in some chemical parameters indicate potential health risks. The study concludes that both water sources require adequate treatment before consumption and recommends regular monitoring to ensure safety.
