Abstract

Ocimum gratissimum (scent leaf) is an aromatic medicinal plant widely used in African and Asian traditional therapy. This study evaluated the biochemical profile of the chloroform extract of Ocimum gratissimum (Scent leaf) collected from Kano State. Qualitative analysis confirmed the presence of alkaloids, phenols, tannins, and steroids. Quantitative results revealed alkaloids as the most abundant constituent (431.44 pm 0.74 mg/g), followed by phenols (211.65 \pm 0.57 mg/g). Antioxidant testing via DPPH and FRAP assays showed exceptionally high radical scavenging activity, exceeding 79% inhibition even at a minimum concentration of 7.81 \mug/mL. Mineral analysis identified significant levels of Potassium (1205 \pm 31.75 mg/L) and Calcium (87.44 \pm 0.78 mg/L), while vitamin assays showed high Vitamin A content. These findings justify the plant's use in traditional medicine and its potential as a pharmaceutical raw material.
