SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPLICATION OF INSECURITY AMONG FAMILIES IN DALA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, KANO STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study explores the socio-economic implications of insecurity among families in Dala Local Government Area, Kano State. Insecurity has become a major threat to livelihoods, family stability, and community cohesion in many parts of Nigeria. The study aims to identify the prevalent forms of insecurity in Dala LGA, examine their impact on household income and employment, assess the social consequences on family relationships, and explore coping mechanisms adopted by families. A descriptive survey design was employed, using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data were collected through structured questionnaires from a sample of 150 respondents selected using Krejcie and Morgan’s formula. The data were analyzed using SPSS for quantitative variables and thematic analysis for qualitative data. The findings reveal that armed robbery, youth gang violence, burglary, and political unrest are common forms of insecurity in the area. These significantly affect economic activities by reducing income, increasing unemployment, and forcing relocation. Social consequences include strained family relationships, increased psychological stress, and a breakdown in community trust. In response, families adopt coping strategies such as community vigilance, migration, and support from religious institutions. The study concludes that insecurity in Dala LGA has deep-rooted and multifaceted effects on families. It recommends stronger community policing, youth empowerment initiatives, trauma support programs, and effective policy implementation to mitigate these impacts and promote stability.
