DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF A MACHINE FOR MOULDING PLASTIC INTERLOCKING BLOCKS (PAVERS)
Abstract
This research focuses on the design and development of a machine for moulding plastic
interlocking blocks using waste Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) as the primary raw
material. The project aims to provide a sustainable solution for plastic waste management
by converting non-biodegradable waste into useful construction materials. The machine
integrates melting, mixing, and moulding processes into a single unit powered by an electric
motor and heated by a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) burner. Major components include
the melting barrel, mixing chamber, extruder screw, moulds, and frame. The system was
designed and fabricated using locally sourced materials to ensure affordability and
adaptability for small-scale production. Testing revealed that the machine could
successfully melt and mould LDPE waste into durable interlocking blocks with an
efficiency of approximately 90%, producing 4–5 blocks per hour. The project demonstrates
the technical and economic viability of small-scale plastic recycling for eco-friendly
construction applications.
