TIO2 MODIFIED COCOA BIOCHAR: PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION FOR IMPROVED WASTEWATER PURIFICATION
Abstract
Industrialization has led to increased wastewater pollution, introducing persistent organic contaminants that pose environmental and health risks. Conventional treatment methods often fall short, necessitating alternative solutions like biochar, a low-cost adsorbent with high surface area and porosity. This study explores the synthesis, characterization, and efficiency of TiO₂-modified cocoa pod biochar (TiO₂-CBC) for wastewater remediation. Cocoa pod biochar was produced via pyrolysis at 773K and modified with TiO₂ through a controlled impregnation and calcination process. Characterization using FTIR, SEM-EDX, and XRD confirmed the successful incorporation of TiO₂, enhancing biochar’s adsorption and photocatalytic properties. TiO₂-CBC demonstrated superior contaminant removal compared to unmodified biochar, effectively degrading organic pollutants. The findings suggest TiO₂-CBC as a promising, cost-effective material for wastewater treatment. Future research should focus on optimizing synthesis, scaling applications, and assessing long-term stability in real-world conditions.
