A MORPHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF ÙRÒ NUMERALS
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study presents a morphological analysis of Ùrò numerals. A speech community in Ajowa Akoko, Akoko North West Local Government Area in Ondo state, Nigeria. The data for this study was primarily sourced from informants who were native speakers and have spent more than 40years in the land coupled with the researcher‘s intuitive knowledge of the speech form. A descriptive method was adopted in analyzing the data for this study. The work examines the base systems and computational attestations in mathematical composition of Ùrò numerals as well as the morphological processes such as affixes in realizing numbers in the speech form. It was therefore discovered that the direction of counting in the dialect is largely progressive. Furthermore, the speech form adopts vigesimal (base 20) and decimal (base 10) systems of counting. In short, it is noted that the Ùrò numeral system provide a reliable linguistic information for both theoretical and empirical study for further research on other aspects of the speech form.
