PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITIES OF CUCUMIS SATIVUS (CUCUMBER)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) is a widely consumed vegetable known for its high water content and nutritional benefits. It keeps you from being dehydrated, and it consists of anti cancer activity, wound healing activity and various traditional use like bleeding disorder, anuria, burning disorder . The cucumber is used internally for the treatment of heat rash, burns wound and it’s used as cosmetics for softening, moisturizing and whitening skin. Raw cucumber is also used for the treatment of Celiac disease, and in china raw cucumber is used for the treatment of dysentery in children. The seeds are used as diuretic, anthelmintic and also as taeniacide. This study was carried out to determine the Phytochemical and antioxidant activities of Cucumis sativus extract in different solvents.
Ethanol and aqueous extract of Cucumis Sativus were prepared after which they were subjected to phytochemical analysis and antioxidant using standard method. The ethanol and aqueous extract of Cucumis Sativus were rich in alkaloid, saponins, terpenoids, while the ethanol extract were rich in glycosides, tannis. It was observed that ethanol extract of Cucumis Sativus peels had the highest concentrations of total phenolic substances when compared with aqueous extract considered. The total antioxidant activity of Cucumis Sativus compared with the standard antioxidant BHT, the results revealed that the ethanolic extract showed the highest total antioxidant activity, (2.381) as compared to aqueous extract were found to be (1.255) respectively.
The Aqueous extract showed lowest total antioxidant activity (1.255) compared to that of ethanolic. The results were compared with BHT, a reference standard having total antioxidant activity 1.219± 0.37. The total antioxidant activity shown by the ethanolic extract were found to be significant, while that of aqueous was found to be less-significant when compared with BHT. (Butylatedhydroxyl toluene). Cucumber has a rich and valued source of bioactive compounds with significant antioxidant properties
