CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITIES OF BRYOPHYLLUM PINNATUM AND PEPEROMIA PELLUCIDA IN DIABETIC -INDUCED WISTAR RATS
Abstract
Background of Study: Plants are the backbone of life on Earth, providing essential resources such as oxygen, food, shelter, and medicine. They are the primary producers of the ecosystem, converting sunlight into energy through photosynthesis. In traditional medical systems, Bryophyllum pinnatumand Peperomia pellucida have been valued for their diverse therapeutic properties. Peperomia pellucida is commonly employed in treating wounds, burns, inflammation, and respiratory issues.
Methods: The study involved analyses of proximate, phytochemical, microbial, and antidiabetic properties, conducted on Wister rats.
Results: The non-induced Wister rat stool exhibited microbial counts ranging from 1.08 x 10^5 to 8.8 x 10^8 after 24 hours, and 1.8 x 10^7 to 4.0 x 10^9 after 48 hours. The induced Wister rat showed counts ranging from 9.0 x 10^5 to 3.2 x 10^8. The findings indicated the presence of alkaloids, phenols, flavonoids, saponins, and glycosides, with alkaloids being the most abundant. Metal analysis detected the presence of Na, Mg, Zn, and Fe with a range starting from 0.07 for Standard use.
Conclusion: This study investigated the potential phytochemical, antioxidant, and antidiabetic properties of Bryophyllum pinnatum and Peperomia pellucida as therapeutic agents in contemporary medicine.
Result Values: Microbial counts: 1.08 x 10^5 to 8.8 x 10^8 (24h), 1.8 x 10^7 to 4.0 x 10^9 (48h)
Phytochemicals: Alkaloids, phenols, flavonoids, saponins, glycosides
Metal analysis: Na, Mg, Zn, Fe (range starting from 0.07)
