FACTORS RESPONSIBLE FOR SELF-MEDICATION PRACTICE AMONG STUDENTS OF ADEYEMI COLLEGE OF EDUCATION,ONDO, ONDO STATE
Abstract
The study investigated the factors responsible for selfmedication practice among students of Adeyemi College of Education,Ondo,Ondo State.Three(3)research questions were used for the study with descriptive survey design adopted.Descriptive sample technique and sample size of 100 respondents were used for the study.The responses were analyzed using simple percentage,mean(X)and standard deviation.The study was reported,among other things,that The need to care for oneself,Lack of time to contact a doctor due to classroom lectures,Unfriendly atlitudes of healthcare workers, Availabiliry of drugs in places other than pharmacies etc are the factors responsible for self-medication among students.The study also revealed the knowledge of self- medication practice among students which entails;having the notion about antibiotics, self-medication may lead to the utilization of incorrect medications,self-medication causes antibiotic resistance etc.It was further reported that the effects of self- medication practice among students are liver toxicity;,medical issues and harmful drug interactions,illness aggravation,death etc.It was recommended that strict laws,control over misguiding advertisements and previous experience as this is one of the factors identified by students,hence healthcare education to all is imperative,the health facilities need to be upgraded and made more convenient for people,educational programme are required to educate university students about the right use of medicine,minimizing easy accessibiliry to drugs by enforcing laws and regulations etc
