Abstract

Globalization has expanded opportunities for developing countries to integrate into international markets; however, Nigerian-made products face persistent barriers that hinder their competitiveness on the global stage. This study assessed the key challenges confronting Nigerian products in accessing international markets, with a focus on quality standards, infrastructure, finance, regulatory environment, and global competition. The research employed a mixed-method approach, combining quantitative surveys of 100 manufacturers, exporters, and trade officials with qualitative interviews of policymakers, trade experts, and representatives of trade associations. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis to provide a holistic understanding of the challenges and opportunities. Findings revealed that poor infrastructure (59%), corruption and bureaucratic red tape (73%), and stringent lending conditions (41%) were major constraints limiting export performance. Quality standards and inadequate certification facilities accounted for frequent product rejections (45%), while global competition posed significant challenges, with 54% of respondents citing the superior brand recognition of foreign products. Despite these setbacks, globalization also offered opportunities such as increased export prospects (40%), access to advanced technologies (41%), and potential for global brand recognition (54%). Government policies played a critical role, with respondents emphasizing the need for improved infrastructure (51%), access to export financing (48%), and streamlined regulatory procedures (46%) to enhance export capacity. The study concludes that Nigeria’s integration into the global market requires strategic reforms to address infrastructure deficits, quality compliance, and financial barriers, while strengthening branding and trade policies. Such interventions are essential to reposition Nigerian products for sustainable competitiveness in the global economy
